Crime Prevention Through Social Development: What is it?

Crime Prevention through Social Development (CPSD) is an approach to preventing crime and victimization that recognizes the complex social, economic, and cultural processes that contribute to crime and victimization.

CPSD seeks to strengthen the “bridge” between criminal justice policies and programs and the safe, secure, and pro-social development of individuals, families, and communities. It does this by tackling the factors which contribute to crime and victimization that are amenable to change. MORE>

Late & Unique Nighttime Alternatives (LUNA) is a community-level strategy offering innovative late-night recreation and leisure programming in Whistler as a healthy nightlife alternative. LUNA promotes a safer community with a Crime Prevention through Social Development (CPSD) approach.

:: Events ::
LUNA produces unique, affordable, alcohol-free events year-round. Most well-known are: the popular LUNAFLIKS outdoor film experience at Lost Lake, Sea to Sky Battle of the Bands, Moist, the Pool Party, and Drop-in Dodgeball.

Special events are offered on Friday nights from November to April and June to September. Drop-in Sports are offered Tuesday nights during the ski season, and are part of the BC Active Communities initiative to increase participation in recreational activity by 20% by 2010. LUNA hosts approximately 50 events and 2,500 young adults per year. MORE>

:: Training Program ::
LUNA's Community Event Coordination program offers young adults (18-35) access to training, skills-building and meaningful volunteer work to empower them with skills, a voice, and confidence to further their relationships, goals, and careers. MORE>

:: Proven Successes ::
In February 2005, a statistical analysis was conducted as to the impact of LUNA events on the volume of alcohol related calls investigated by the RCMP. Of the samples recorded, there was a 20% reduction in calls for service on the days LUNA events were offered as compared to days our events were not offered.

:: History ::
The LUNA program is a result of action to address complaints from visitors about late-night alcohol-related noise & disturbances in Whistler Village. With assistance from the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) Bylaw Services, Whistler Community Services Society (WCSS) conducted nine trial events in 2003 with great response.

In September 2003 LUNA Grantwriter, Kiran Pal-Pross, acquired funding to offer events on a weekly basis, and became the full-time Coordinator.

In order to retain its insurance policy, WCSS handed LUNA to the RMOW in December 2004. LUNA became a Recreation Services program in the RMOW Community Life department.

:: Staff ::
LUNA operates with one full-time Coordinator, one casual Program Leader, up to 12 young adult Event Trainees, and a number of casual volunteers.

:: Addressing Needs ::
LUNA is a documented priority in the Whistler 2020 Strategy. The Recreation & Leisure, Health & Social, and Arts & Culture Task Forces have indicated actions necessary to support young adults and their healthy recreation in Whistler.

LUNA continues to counteract the imbalance of alcohol-focussed nightlife in Whistler with alcohol-free alternatives. As a result, locals. seasonal workers and visitors receive a healthier, better quality, Whistler experience.

LUNA appreciates any kind of support from local businesses and organizations, whether it is sponsorship, donated prizes for events, a place to showcase our weekly posters, volunteers, or word-of-mouth advertising.
