Feature film: ONE WEEK | Rated PG
What would you do?

Michael McGowan/Canada/2008/94 min

One Week explores the concept of what one would do if given one week to live. When confronted with his mortality, Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson) impulsively buys a vintage motorcycle and sets off on a road trip that starts in Toronto and ends up in Tofino. Along the way, Canadiana favourites such as the Stanley Cup, Tim Horton’s coffee, the world’s largest nickel in Sudbury, Ontario, and the Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie all make appearances.

Humorous, profound and extremely moving, One Week uses the great Canadian landscape as the backdrop to the story of a man and his life’s journey. In the search for himself, he finds out what makes this country, and his life, so beautiful.

“Forgoing clichés, this humanistic film deftly balances comedy and pathos in a narrative filled with acutely observed details that will have you laughing out loud.”

Short film: VOYAGER by by Jaime Arvizu, Leo Aguitar and Tyler Lemer-Meyer, Vancouver BC
Feature film: HOME
| Rated G | A stunning visual portrayal of Earth

Yann Arthus-Bertrand/France/2009/118 min

Yann Arthus-Bertrand became famous through the “Earth from above,” a photographic portrait of aerial shots of our planet. Three million copies of his book have been sold and his free, open-air exhibitions have been seen by more than one hundred million people.

HOME carries on this tradition. This feature is made up of stunning aerial images which have been filmed in 54 countries around the world, in 120 locations. Narration by Glenn Close offers constructive insight into the major environmental and social challenges facing our world. HOME is rated G.

FREE shuttles will be provided by our transportation sponsor, Ziptrek Ecotours, from the gondolas from 8:30-9:30PM and again after the film. Attendees will be able to learn about some of our community’s environmental initiatives prior to the film screening.

“This movie should be both magnificent and intelligent but, above all, it should be steadfastly constructive. To give you an example amongst many others: what is important is not the 50% of the forests which have disappeared, but the 50% which remain. What is important today is that we are 6 billion intelligent beings who can take action.”
-YANN ARTHUS-BERTRAND

This activities involved in screening HOME will be carbon offset, thanks to a donation by the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation and consultation by the Pembina Institute. As well, greenhouse gas emissions which were caused by air-travel and hours of photography by helicopter are being offset by supporting clean development projects (biogas production project in the Hassan district in India.

Feature film: PUSH
| Rated 14A | One push can change everything

Paul McGuigan/ Canada, UK, USA /2009/111 min

Push, the latest film by Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin), begins in 1945 when a shadowy U.S. government agency called Division produced a drug to genetically transform humans into an army of psychic warriors with telepathic, clairvoyant, and telekinetic super powers. They can move objects, see and create the future, and kill others without ever touching them.

Nick (Chris Evans, Sunshine), a second-generation telekinetic Mover has been in hiding in the last safe place for psychic fugitives – Hong Kong – since his father was murdered by Division over ten years ago. Cassie (Dakota Fanning, Coraline), a future-seeing Watcher, forces him out of hiding to help her find Kira (Camilla Belle, The Chumscrubber), an escaped, mind-controlling Pusher who may have the power to end Division operations. Division agent and Pusher, Henry Carver (Djimon Hounsou), is swiftly on their trail, forcing Nick and Cassie to run for their lives.

Unique to this captivating sci-fi action-thriller is its special effects, which are mostly created with stuntmen and clever camera work rather than being CGI-dependent. Push is a captivating and eye-grabbing film.

There are nine types of psychics in Push:

Pushers:
Pushers push specific thoughts, memories, and even emotions into their targets. This technique can be used to gain a subject's trust or to have them perform any action, thinking it was their own agenda.

Movers: Movers manipulate inanimate objects at varying distances. Advanced Movers can work at the molecular level creating protective shields in the air around them.

Watchers: Watchers are trained to self-induce visions of the future, very much like a prolonged sense of déjà vu. The technique of following the future, either of a person or object, is called subject tracking.

Bleeders: Bleeders have the ability to emit high-pitched sonic vibrations that cause ruptures in a target's blood vessels.

Sniffs: Sniffs are highly developed psychometrics who can track the location of either people or objects over varying distances. Sniffs receive information based on images, not specific addresses, which is why identifiable landmarks help increase their effectiveness.

Shifters: Shifters can temporarily shift patterns of light on any object to create illusions to the naked eye. They work mostly on a touch basis, but once the illusion is established, it remains with the object for short periods of time.

Wipers: Wipers are skilled at either temporary or permanent memory erasure, an invaluable asset in espionage.

Shadows: Shadows are trained to block the vision of other clairvoyants such as Sniffs, making any subject within their target radius appear "dark".

Stitchers: Stitchers are psychic surgeons trained to quickly reconstruct cells to their previous or healthy state. Using only their hands, they can heal and even "unheal" whatever they have done.

Genre: Sci-Fi | Action | Thriller

Short film: VERSUS by Peter Harvey
, Vancouver BC
Feature film: BATTLE IN SEATTLE
| Rated PG | The whole world is watching

Stuart Townsend /USA | Canada | Germany | UK/2007/99 min

It’s November 1999, and five days are about to rock the world as tens of thousands of demonstrators take to the streets of Seattle in protest of the World Trade Organization’s Ministerial Meeting. Among them are Django (Andre Benjamin), Sam (Jennifer Carpenter), Lou (Michelle Rodriguez) and Jay (Martin Henderson). Each has a unique story, but they’re united in a common desire to be heard and to make a difference in the world. For these four protesters, this is very personal and the stakes are higher than mere politics.

A peaceful demonstration to stop the WTO talks quickly escalates into a full-scale riot, and soon a State of Emergency is declared by the Mayor of Seattle. The streets are mayhem, and the WTO is paralyzed. Caught in the crossfire of civil liberties and keeping the peace are Seattle residents, including its beleaguered mayor (Ray Liotta), a riot cop on the streets (Woody Harrelson) and his pregnant wife (Charlize Theron). The choices they all make will change their lives forever.

Writer/Director Stuart Townsend brings together this talented ensemble to intertwine different points of view – from protesters and police to delegates and doctors -- each of whom intentionally or accidentally find themselves on the streets of Seattle in those last days of the millennium. Townsend seamlessly merges footage of the real event with his fictional narrative. Ultimately, Battle in Seattle illustrates that even against incredible odds, ordinary people can change the world.

Short film: VERSUS
Peter Harvey /Canada
Picturesquely shot in a diner letting through minimal rays of afternoon sunlight, Versus follows a competitive conversation between two pop culture junkies. All kinds of wise cracks and big calls are made as these two attempt to outwit each on the themes of cuisine, religion, animation and justice.

Reminiscent of Pulp Fiction's opening scene where Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer debate the correct etiquette of the use of the term garçon, Versus pits the Devil against God, Star Wars against Star Trek, salt against pepper, Snake Pliskin against Mad Max and ultimately cops against robbers. It is clear from the dialogue that director Peter Harvey grew up in a Generation X Household under the guidance of Tarantino and Kevin Smith.

There is rarely a victor in these arguments, rather it is the process of dispute that is so celebrated here until the witty repartee between two buddies having brunch becomes much more than hypothetical banter.

The Shambhala festival, first held in 1998, is the longest running electronic music and arts festival in Canada. How does a word-of-mouth festival with no corporate sponsorship come to attract crowds of over 12,000 and top DJs and producers like Krafty Kuts, Z-Trip and Fort Knox Five? Shambhala offers a glimpse into how such a thing is possible when a community of visionaries come together to turn their dreams into reality.

This documentary captures the spirit of the first ten years of Shambhala, the people, the music, the mountains, the river that runs through the site and the feeling of gathering for six days with thousands of beautiful freaks.

Her brother Erik (Jonas Rimeika) returns from Stockholm to find out what happened to her, and is shocked to discover his sweet and innocent sister is anything but. When they are forced to work together on an investigation whose geographic jurisdiction is as mysterious as the motive of the crime they are out to solve, their differences both threaten the investigation and help pierce its mystery.

Lorsqu’ils seront forces à travailler ensemble sur une enquête don’t la jurisdiction géographique est aussi nébuleuse que les motivations de l’auteur du crime, leurs differences vont à la fois metre en peril l’enquête et les aider à élucider le mystère.
